So here is my list for my Top 5 Directors of all time. I mainly chose directors who also write their own stuff. I think that's makes it more their movie. I get in these kicks where I will watch a movie by a certain director/writer and then I want to watch all their stuff. So here's my Top 5.
Honorable Mentions : Tim Burton (obviously), Martin Scorcese, John Carpenter, Mel Brooks (thanks Jesse), M. Night Shyamalan, John Hughes, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas (can't leave out Star Wars), Guillermo del Toro, Robert Rodriguez
1). Quentin Tarantino - This guy is such a goofy, nerdy, dorky guy but damn can he make movies! The dialogue that he is able to write is unbelievable. Everything ties in together and the story lines are amazing. He can do drama, action, comedy, and I'm pretty sure he made his own genre. Lets call it, awesome! He is my favorite movie maker. His movies that he wrote and directed are (in order) : Reservoir Dogs - Pulp Fiction - Jackie Brown - Kill Bill vol.1 - Kill Bill vol.2 - Deathproof - Inglorious Bastards
2). Christopher Nolan - He's been making movies for a while but only has been popular the last couple years. To me, he is why people should go to the movie theaters. His movies are ground breaking. Memento was a story that was filmed backwards. Insane! He writes his screenplays in such a fascinating way, you can't help but be glued to the screen just waiting on the edge of your seat with what happens next. And thank god he decided to re-do the Batman movies. I think they went downhill after Tim Burton stopped doing them. I can't wait for the next and final one. His movies that he wrote and directed are (in order) : Memento - Insomnia (director only) - Batman Begins - The Prestige - The Dark Knight - Inception
3). Kevin Smith - Not too many people can write comedy like Kevin Smith. His movies are vulgar, but absolutely hilarious. His also can do drama pretty well too. Anyone who says they didn't get a little teary eyed when Jennifer Lopez died in Jersey Girl is lying. His movies are smart, thought out and very well done. And the characters he uses all kinda interweave with each other. I love all of his stuff and own every one of them. His best? Many will say Clerks, but for me it is Dogma. Zack and Miri is a close second. His movies that he wrote and directed are (in order) : Clerks - Mallrats - Chasing Amy - Dogma - Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back - Jersey Girl - Clerks II - Zack and Miri Make a Porno
4). Judd Apatow - He only has 3 movies that he actually wrote and directed but I love every single one of them. His comedy is 100% funny. Very smart too. He uses real life situations for a lot of his comedy and his wife (Leslie Mann) and Seth Rogen so far have been in each one of them. Not too many people liked Funny People, but I think that they had the same reaction that a lot of people had. It wasn't really all that funny. It was more of a drama than anything. The second time I watched it was much, much better. I look forward to his next movie. His movies that he wrote and directed are (in order) : 40 Year Old Virgin - Knocked Up - Funny People
5). James Cameron - My buddy and I will probably continue to have this argument until the end of time. I think James Cameron is a phenomenal Writer/Director. He thinks he is lame, self-centered and has no idea to make a good movie To me, James Cameron makes awesome movies. His movies may not have the most original stories all the time but the details he puts into his movies are fantastic. They are all action packed and high budgeted. Maybe too high budgeted but the action sequences are worth it. The result is unforgettable scenes, indescribable moments and some of the most memorable characters in movie history. His movies that he wrote and directed are (in order) - The Terminator - Aliens - The Abyss - Terminator 2: Judgement Day - True Lies - Titanic - Avatar
So there's my list. Leave your favorites in the comments if you want.
